Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I'm using Firefox and I don't see a player on the page.
The on-page player uses Windows Media Player.  Firefox requires a plug-in which must be installed manually.  You can download it here.
How can we get our announcement on radioSOMD.fm?
Our staff pulls announcements from the somd.com Announcements and Community Calendar. Of course, there are far too many for us to read them all.  If you have a good voice and are technically inclined, you can increase your chances of having your spot aired by recording your own and email them to us at radio(at)somd.com.  Here are the specs:

-- Save your file as an MP3 at 128Kbps -- Keep it under 60 seconds -- Speak clearly and enunciate well -- Leave a few seconds of silence at the beginning and end. We'll trim it to the proper length.

For the first time, we suggest doing one and sending it to us so we can be sure it meets the requirements to go on air.

You can get a good quality recording using a decent headset and the free Audacity software.  We use the Beta version.

I hear several local people saying their name on the air.  Can I do this too?
You certainly may.  These are called liners in radio lingo and we're looking for as many as we can get from our local listeners.  You'll have to be somewhat technically inclined and have a decent microphone or headset on your PC. You can get a good quality recording using the free Audacity software.  We use the Beta version.

Please keep them under 10 seconds and leave a few seconds of silence at the beginning and end.  The submitted recordings should be an MP3 at 128Kbps.

A simple script would be something like: "Hi, This is Bob from Waldorf and you're listening to radio S-O-M-D.fm"  Feel free to be creative, but please always start with your first name and town and keep it under 10 seconds.

When you're finished, just email the file(s) to radio(at)somd.com.

What if I just want to express my opinion on the air, is there a way I can do this?
We'll run a live show from 8:00 am until noon on weekdays.  The host will be taking listener calls during his show.

We also have a listener line where you can leave a message any time - 240-538-9161.  We will listen to the messages every day and select the best ones to play on air throughout the day.  If selected, your message will run for several days at various times.

Please be sure to start out with your first name and town. Calls from land lines will sound better than calls made from cell phones.

I have an idea for a show.  How do I pitch it to you?
We are always interested in your ideas to make radioSOMD.fm even better.  To pitch your show ideas, call us at 888-612-0003 or send an email to radio(at)somd.com.  Keep in mind our local focus - shows that pertain specifically to Charles, Calvert or St. Mary's Counties will be given priority attention.
I have a general suggestion for you or feedback on your programming.  How do I let you know?
We are completely open to suggestions and appreciate all feedback.  Please email us at radio(at)somd.com and let us know what's on your mind!
I have a local band and would like my music to be played on the air.  How can I make that happen?
radioSOMD.fm is proud to be a supporter of local musicians and we play their songs every hour.  Send us an email at radio(at)somd.com and we'll give you information on how to get your songs in our playlist.  It doesn't matter if you're a small band just starting out or veterans with a huge following - we want to promote you!

Do I need a computer to listen to radioSOMD.fm?
A computer is the most common way to access internet radio.  However, internet radio and universal Wi-Fi access is the way of the future.  There are even current plans to put Wi-Fi radios in cars.  One of our favorite devices is the internet clock radio.  Several of our staff are using the Logitech Squeezebox Boom.  It's a slick device that lets us wake up every morning to radioSOMD.fm in awesome stereo sound.  It will work either wireless or hardwired ethernet. Logitech Squeezebox Boom All-In-One Wi-Fi Internet Radio.  You can see more internet radios here.  We'll be reviewing specific models and making recommendations in coming weeks.
